Gilbert Goh – The Incidental Hero

Gilbert Goh, former Reform Party member first and then National Solidarity Party member next, has found his calling. Not as a job as a political party member in RP or NSP, but as an activist as his vocation. A father, who worked in Australia and got his PR there but chose to return to Singapore, founded Transitioning.org, a support site for the unemployed and underemployed. His first protest on February 16 this year was phenomenal. It was almost like a Workers Party rally but better. Better because he was a zero turned hero overnight by himself without any party backing, without any resources and yet managed to pack supporters from all walks of life in their thousands. Gilbert Goh showed quick thinking leadership in an urgent social cause that rose above party politics.

He knew what Singaporeans wanted and acted on it while everyone one else just talked and talked but no action. He knew Singaporeans, you and me, are tired of the PAP inviting foreigners here to compete unfairly with us for jobs, to drive up housing and COE prices, to squeeze with us on MRT trains and SBS buses and even to tell us not to cook curry in our own homes. When he organised his very successful first protest against the PAP’s 6.9 million White Paper population policy, he was quickly described by his critics as anti-foreigner when deep down he was just pro-Singapore. His ideas and words were twisted by the PAP, the media, even those in the internet who are so-called fellow internet activists. We know who they are.

Gilbert Goh, the brains and soul behind Transitioning.org, is organising a sequel protest on Labour Day at Speakers’ Corner. Mr Leong Sze Hian, Nizam Ismail and M Ravi are among the confirmed speakers. It is up to all of us to make it a bigger success than the first one. The first protest is proof that the protest can be peaceful, the police dares not interfere and everyone who cares will be there to make a difference. We can do our part to save Singapore and come out with courage to protest in person than complaining behind our keyboards.

Support Gilbert Goh, the humble champion of Singaporean workers, the first true brave protestor in Singapore in many years, and we support each other to say No to the PAP.

Thank you Gilbert.
